Workshop, public symposium to focus on transboundary water-energy nexus

The Faculty of Environmental Studies (FES) at York University and the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies in Israel present a one-day research workshop and a one-day public symposium at York University called “The water and energy nexus within a transboundary context: Middle Eastern and North American perspectives.”

water and renewable energyThe research forum (invitation only) runs Nov. 1 from 1 to 4 p.m., and the public symposium (free, and open to all) runs Nov. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Room 142, Health, Nursing and Environmental Studies Building.

The transboundary water-energy nexus was chosen to highlight the need for a balanced approach to socially and politically charged challenges. The Arava Institute specializes in transboundary co-operation in a region known for animosity between neighbours. Canada has also had to deal with conflicts over resources, both with the United States and with Indigenous territories and peoples within Canada.

This symposium aims to broaden minds regarding both the scientific content and possibilities for co-operation, promote a positive and informed dialogue, and develop joint projects between the Arava Institute, York University and other institutions.

FES houses one of York’s largest research-based graduate programs in environmental issues. The Faculty has earned an international reputation for its interdisciplinary approach to environmental research and teaching.

The Arava Institute is a leading environmental teaching and research program in the Middle East, preparing future Arab and Jewish leaders from the Middle East and around the world to cooperatively solve the region’s environmental challenges. Located in the heart of Israel’s Arava desert, the institute is a unique oasis of environmental education, research and international cooperation, and has an excellent track record for studying and trying to resolve transboundary issues.
