Four students from York University are among the inaugural recipients of the Vector Scholarship in Artificial Intelligence (AI), an award from the Vector Institute that recognizes promising AI talent in Ontario.

The merit-based scholarship supports the recruitment of top students to AI-related master's programs that prepare graduates for the workforce. It was awarded to 66 of the best and brightest students from nine Ontario universities studying in 20 master's programs in core technical and complementary AI-related fields.

Scholarship recipients and students enrolled in recognized master's programs will have early access to networking and internship opportunities with Vector’s industry sponsors – companies at the forefront of AI adoption in Canada.

The scholarships are valued at $17,500 for one year and are expected to increase access to AI advanced studies and build community among AI scholars.

The AI master's initiative aims to support the expansion of a diverse and highly skilled talent pool, helping Ontario-based companies and labs attract and retain top candidates in this burgeoning field.

“The Vector AI master's recognition is an industry approval of our program’s capabilities to teach and prepare students in AI and related fields,” said Schulich Professor Murat Kristal. “This recognition shows the quality of our MBAN program and school.”

Building on the success of the inaugural round of scholarships, Vector will launch the 2019-20 scholarship competition early in 2019.
