Black Child & Youth Studies Network Conference to unite researchers, policy-makers and Black communities

A multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral conference to discuss the state of Ontario’s Black children and youth will be hosted by York University’s Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora on April 1.

The one-day Black Child & Youth Studies Network Conference takes place at the Chestnut Conference Centre, University of Toronto, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration is free and meals are also free for attendees.

This multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral conference will connect researchers, policy-makers, service providers, graduate students, early-career scholars, and Black communities to focus on the social and educational experiences of Ontario’s Black youth.

The goal is to foster dialogue for the purpose of enhancing the life experiences and outcomes of Black children and youth, and furthering the understanding of Black communities through panel discussions, keynote speakers and more.

The conference will:

  • share insights, knowledge and preliminary findings from research on the educational and social experiences of Ontario’s Black children/youth and communities;
  • contribute to the conversation around the needs and challenges of Black children/youth and communities;
  • provide policy and program recommendations to address the gaps in services for Black communities; and
  • create a forum for Black graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and early-career scholars to explore possibilities of establishing a professional network.

The conference will be structured around several panels related to the social and educational experiences of Black youth. Panels will include youth, researchers, practitioners and community members.

The conference day will close with a networking session for graduate students and early-career scholars. Graduate students outside of the GTA may be eligible for travel assistance. Register for the networking session online.
