On Friday night (Sept. 27), the York University Lions women’s rugby team kept its win streak strong as they closed their regular season overpowering Wilfrid Laurier University by a score of 78-7 at Alumni Field.
The Lions were coming off of a hot win away defeating the University of Waterloo Warriors 39-5 and finished the regular season a perfect 4-0 on the year and in first place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Russell Division.
The game opened to a thrilling start with the first try of the match scored by Brittany Ediagbonya just one minute in. Five minutes later there was a try by Esther Sivalingam and a conversion from Natasha Naismith. More details on the York Lions website.
No. 3 men’s soccer Lions battle for draw in away game against No. 9 Gryphons
The No. 3 nationally ranked York University Lions men’s soccer team tied 2-2 with the No. 9 ranked University of Guelph during their away game this Sunday at Alumni Field in Guelph, Ont.
The Gryphons’ Evan Dick scored the first goal of the game and the only goal of the first half. The Lions fired three shots on goal in the first; however, none were able to find the back of the Gryphons net.
The Gryphons went into half time taking the lead 1-0 against the Lions. More details.
Field hockey Lions beat Queen’s 3-1, tie first place Varsity Blues
On Saturday, Sept. 28, the York University Lions field hockey team played against Queen’s University, securing a 3-1 win.
York’s Natalie Winter scored the first goal of the game in the first quarter, which was followed by a goal off a penalty corner by third-year defender Frankie St. Louis. Her unassisted goal resulted in a 2-0 lead for the Lions by the end of the opening frame. More details.
Football Lions fall to Warriors in Saturday afternoon action
The York University Lions football team was defeated by a score of 57-19 by the University of Waterloo on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 28) at Warrior Field.
The first quarter was a tight affair with each team putting together one scoring drive and otherwise punting. The Warriors got on the board first when Tre Ford completed a 46-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Ternowski for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead mid-way through the frame, and Mitchell Mackett was good on a 10-yard field goal with two seconds left to cap a seven-play, 95-yard drive with three points. Women’s soccer Lions tie second-place Gryphons in away game
The York University Lions women’s soccer team tied the University of Guelph, the second-place team in the OUA West Division, by a score of 2-2 on Sept. 29 in Guelph, Ont.
All the scoring action of the game took place within the first 19 minutes of the game.
The game was only five minutes in when rookie Vanessa Salvaggio scored the first goal of the game, making it the first goal of her career as a Lion, which was assisted by forward Marissa Castellano. More details.
