The Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research at York University is inviting seed grant applications for critical social science perspectives in global health research.
Five seed grants worth up to $5,000 CAD each will be awarded to York faculty undertaking projects that contribute to one or more of the Institute’s three themes: planetary health, global health and humanitarianism, and global health foresighting. York graduate students and research fellows are welcome to apply with the support of a York faculty member as the principal investigator.
The deadline for submissions is Sunday, April 3 at 11:59 p.m. Awards will be announced on April 29. Applicants are strongly encouraged to learn more about the three research themes of the Dahdaleh Institute at yorku.ca/dighr.
Applicants and the broader York community are invited to attend the 2022 Workshop on Critical Social Science Perspectives in Global Health on March 8 and 9 to engage with other York researchers in this area to exchange insights and consider opportunities for collaboration.
The Critical Perspectives in Global Health (CPGH) program supports a critical social science approach to global public health. While the definition of what constitutes critical research is quite broad, it usually involves the use of critical theory with social justice aims. Critical social science perspectives in global health are transdisciplinary, participatory, experimental, or experiential analyses that actively seek greater effectiveness, equity and excellence in global health. This means engaging directly with global public health actors, structures and systems to transform global public health while remaining committed to social science theory and methodology.
Dr. James Orbinski, director of the Dahdaleh Institute, says “the scale of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vulnerabilities it has revealed, and the complexities of the global public health response make it clear that we need to foster this kind of research to shape a more effective and socially just global health.”
The CPGH Seed Grant program is intended to foster more research in this area and to encourage faculty to develop grant proposals for fall Tri-Council and other funders’ grant submission deadlines. Seed grant recipients will be invited to present on their work-in-progress at the 2023 Workshop on Critical Social Science Perspectives in Global Health.
