November is Community Safety & Crime Prevention Month

The Canadian Safety Council has designated November as Community Safety & Crime Prevention Month. Every fall, York University promotes and recognizes campus safety services and efforts.

To recognize this month, York University's Community Safety Department is promoting the many services available to community members. For information about York University’s community-driven safety strategy, see the Community Safety Department's Strategic Plan, which was developed through extensive consultation involving 7,000 community members.

Safer together

The University is dedicated to supporting a safe environment to study, teach, work or live at York University. The Community Safety Department is also committed to your safety and provides a range of services and supports. The department works closely with departments from across the University, including Occupational Health and Safety, Facilities Services and the Division of Students to provide a holistic approach to safety. Your safety is and will always be the greatest priority. The department is available to you, and we encourage you to contact us at any time.

Community Safety Department

The Community Safety Department operates on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week with front-line teams continuously supporting York University's campuses in a variety of first-responder functions. Essential activities also include checks on thousands of pieces of safety equipment and systems, a function conducted in close partnership with Facilities Services. The Community Safety Department also delivers emergency preparedness plans and programs to support the community and last year, the department installed emergency assembly point signage throughout York University’s campuses.

The department has also released an online training program for campus emergency procedures, and a new informational video Run, Hide, Defend that shows ways you can protect yourself if you encounter a dangerous situation like an active attacker on campus.

Direct help and information through the York Safety App

The Community Safety Department team continually updates its services with innovative measures for the ease and comfort of the community. The York Safety App provides a direct link to information and support that you can dial directly for assistance. The free York Safety App is available to download and offers quick access to safety resources. Users also receive campus safety and emergency notifications.

Communicating to you in an event of an emergency

The Community Safety Department activates York’s emergency notification system when emergency situations and/or safety issues need to be brought to the attention of the community. Messages are delivered through multiple channels, including email, the York Safety App, and the digital messaging screens located throughout York’s campuses.

A wide range of additional services and supports are available to you. This PDF document offers a glance at some of those services.

The Community Safety Department is ready to serve the needs of the University community. The department welcomes your thoughts and suggestions, which can be submitted by email to Safety@yorku.ca.
