The fifth instalment of York University’s Insights Speakers Series, which focuses on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) will take place Nov. 21, from noon to 1:30 p.m., with a focus on DEDI (decolonization, equity, diversity and inclusion) data in Canadian higher education.
The discussion will be moderated by Sheila Cote-Meek, York University’s vice-president equity, people and culture, with opening remarks from York University President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton.
The panellists for the discussion are:
- Carl James – senior advisor on equity and representation; Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora; and professor in the Faculty of Education, York University.
- Jan Hare – dean pro tem; professor; and associate dean Indigenous education in the Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia.
- Malinda Smith – vice-provost and associate vice-president research, University of Calgary

The Insights Speaker Series is presented by York University’s President’s Advisory Council on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). The council was created in November 2020 to provide advice and counsel on the development of an institutional equity, diversity and inclusion strategy for the University. Insights Speaker Series was developed to inform and inspire community members to take action by provoking thought and conversation about equity, diversity and inclusion issues, and launched in 2021.
