Did you know that York has a Weather Emergency Procedure in place to monitor the weather and guide the decision to suspend operations in cases of severe weather?

When severe weather conditions are expected around York’s campuses, the University may issue a “weather watch” or suspend most campus operations, including cancelling or rescheduling classes or exams, and closing services such as libraries and sporting events.

Stay informed by downloading the York Safety App and enabling notifications to receive weather alerts and other safety matters. Find out more information at the Community Safety webpage, York U’s social media accounts, and the LCD screens around York’s campuses.

Here are some additional tips for a safe and healthy winter from Health, Safety & Employee Well-Being, the Community Safety Department, Facilities Services, health and safety officers, the Joint Health & Safety Committees and Risk Management Services:

  • Check the weather forecast, be prepared and give yourself extra travel time.
  • Wear appropriate, slip-resistant footwear that is designed for use in the winter.
  • Keep your hands free for stabilization.
  • Exercise caution when getting in and out of vehicles.
  • Avoid distractions such as using smartphones while walking.
  • Take smaller and more frequent steps to maximize contact between your feet and walking surfaces.
  • Stay on maintained pedestrian walkways and avoid taking shortcuts.
  • Watch for wet or slippery floors when entering and exiting buildings.
