As autumn approaches and the York University community prepares to settle into their offices and residences, it’s important to remember that others are seeking comfort on campus as well – pests.
The Grounds, Fleet & Waste Management Department is responsible for pest control, and encourages the pan-campus members of York University to do their part to prevent critters such as mice, rats, cockroaches, squirrels, birds, raccoons, wasps and flies from being attracted to the food left around campus.
The most effective way to invite pests into your space is by leaving food out. Improperly storing food and food waste can lead to pests making themselves at home, becoming dependent on the food source, and potentially breeding in the area.
To help keep campus spaces as pest-free as possible, remember to:
- store shelf-stable food in airtight, hard containers made of plastic, metal, or glass, and in cabinets or lockers made of metal or hard plastic;
- store perishable items in a properly functioning fridge that seals tightly;
- regularly clean food storage areas and promptly clean up spills;
- dispose of all food waste in designated waste receptacles;
- contact custodial staff if assistance is needed in locating the nearest waste receptacle; and
- utilize the waste sorting receptacles provided in common areas across campus to sort waste appropriately.
Those who encounter any pest issues are encouraged to contact the Work Control Centre at 416-736-2100 ext. 22401 or submit a service request with all relevant details in Maximo.
