On Nov. 6, members of the York University community gathered at the CBC’s Glenn Gould Studio for the 2024 York U Alumni Awards. More than 200 guests were in attendance, bringing together alumni, friends, faculty, students and staff for an evening of celebration, entertainment and networking.
“Tonight, we celebrate the powerful impact of our alumni whose remarkable contributions are driving positive change in their communities and around the world,” said Julie Lafford, assistant vice-president of alumni engagement. “From their excellent leadership to their strong commitment to the public good, our recipients are truly an inspiration to current and future generations of students.”
Hosted by York alumna and Fox 5 New York reporter Stephanie Bertini (BA ’07), the awards honoured the achievements of the outstanding alumni recipients and celebrated the accomplishments of the York University community.
This year’s honorees were: Michael Eubanks (BA ’93), Scott D. Tanner (BSc ’76, PhD ’80), Alia Abbas (BA ’13, MA ’17) and Bri Susanna Darboh (BA ’15, MA ’18, MBA ’22, PhD ’24).
“York University, led by President Rhonda Lenton, is more than just an institution. It is a community that fosters growth, challenges assumptions and instils a deep sense of purpose and curiosity in each of us,” said Eubanks as he accepted his award. “To be recognized by the University that had done so much for me and for countless others, it is a true privilege.”
The evening also featured entertainment by Nicolina Bozzo, a current student and Season 20 “American Idol” semifinalist, and comedian Julie Nolke (BFA ’12). Alumni guest appearances included York alumnus and astronaut Steve MacLean (BSc ’77, PhD ’83, DSc ’93).
