Community members are invited to help strengthen the health and safety of York University’s workplace environment by joining one of the University’s 23 Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSCs).
Made up of York University workers and management representatives, the committees have been established based on hazard and location, and in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements. JHSCs are a key part of York’s Internal Responsibility System and are integral to strengthening York’s safe and healthy workplace environment. Some of the committees’ key responsibilities include conducting regular inspections of the workplace and holding meetings to discuss ways to improve health and safety.
“The Joint Health and Safety Committees play a key role in protecting the health and safety of all community members at York University,” said Leigh Scott, assistant vice-president human resources and CHRO. “Their commitment to safety is greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed.”
JHSC members gather regularly to participate in learning and development activities, and to share best practices. Their contributions are recognized at an annual Joint Health and Safety Committee Appreciation Event – this year’s is happening later this month – and certificates are awarded to members who exemplify dedication, leadership and collaboration.
No formal training or experience is required to become a JHSC member. Any necessary upskilling will be provided after joining the committee.
