Passings: Esly Alvarez

Esly Alvarez, logistics coordinator for the School of Continuing Studies at York University, passed away at the age of 58 on Feb. 19.

Esly Alvarez

Born in El Salvador May 20, 1966, Alvarez immigrated to Canada from Costa Rica in 1983. Enrolled in Stephen Leacock Collegiate Institute, he quickly mastered English as a second language and graduated with honours as an Ontario Scholar. He went on to pursue studies in accounting at Centennial College and continued his education at York University where he earned a BA in economics and business with a focus on financial management. With a passion for learning, he continued his scholarly pursuits and earned a certificate in supply management and procurement, logistics, from Humber College’s Continuing Studies department.

His career began in the book industry as a customer service representative. Alvarez was passionate about books, history, religion and politics, and his work in this industry excelled when he was promoted to purchaser. The next phase of his career would return him to his alma mater, York University, where he worked for 12 years as a logistics coordinator for the English Language Institute (YUELI) and School of Continuing Studies. He remained a dedicated and valued member of York University’s community until his passing.

Alvarez's personal story mirrors that of many of the students he supported through his work at the University, says Christine Brooks-Cappadocia, assistant vice-president, School of Continuing Studies.

"Esly's dedication and passion for learning left a lasting impact on everyone he worked with at York University,” says Brooks-Cappadocia. “His journey and contributions have inspired many, and his presence will be deeply missed by our community.”

He will be missed by his colleagues for his kindness, willingness to help and his smile.

When he wasn’t at work, Alvarez enjoyed serving in ministry, playing classical guitar and exploring different cuisines. He also enjoyed soccer and watching sports, and spending time outdoors and with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Zara, daughter Mercedes and son Michael, who followed in his father's footsteps and studied at York University.
