The following is an account of the Theatre@York production of Trojan Woman, submitted by the Faculty of Fine Arts.
Over 2,000 ago, the playwright Euripides described the city of Troy as in ruins and an invading Greek army as victorious; Gwendolyn MacEwen”s adaptation of the dramatic classic Trojan Women is as beautiful and horrific as the original.
Guest director Jeannette Lambermont says, “We all marvel at the madness in the world today, but this play shows us that not much has changed in 2,000 years. Canadian poet Gwendolyn MacEwen gives this ancient tale a bluntly modern twist. Daring to mix poetry with the painfully ordinary, she manages, together with Euripides, to show us how we are at once monstrous and beautiful, stupid and enlightened.”
Jeannette Lambermont, (York BFA ‘78) is the co-artistic director of the newly-formed, Toronto-based theatre company DDT inc., where she is currently directing the up-coming production of Gwendolyn MacEwen”s The Trojan Women. She has numerous, prestigious directing credits to her name.
Theatre@York productions promote the talents of the students within the Department of Theatre”s, Faculty of Fine Arts, graduate and undergraduate programs. The cast of Trojan Women is an ensemble of fourth-year undergraduate actors and MFA graduate actors. Fourth-year production student Siobhán Sleath stage manages the production.
Trojan Women is on at York in the Burton Auditorium. There is a preview today at 7:30pm. Regular performances are Tuesday, March 25, through Saturday, March 29, at 7:30 p.m. Matinees are on Wednesday, March 26, and Friday, March 28, at 1pm.
