Memorial for Glendon Professor José Escobar

Colleagues, friends and former students of José Escobar, Professor Emeritus of Hispanic Studies at York’s Glendon campus, are invited to a memorial ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 27 at 7pm, at the Robarts Library, Room 4049, University of Toronto, 130 St. George St. in downtown Toronto.

Professor Escobar died on Sept. 28 following a long illness. A senior scholar, Prof. Escobar taught Spanish literature in the Department of Hispanic Studies at Glendon since it was founded in 1972. He was also a member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies of the University of Toronto.

A founding member of the board of the International Centre of Studies on Spanish Romanticism as well as an elected member of the board of the Society of 19th-Century Spanish Literature, Prof. Escobar was also a visiting professor at several universities in Europe and North America.

Among his numerous publications dealing with modern Spanish Literature of the 18th- and 19th-centuries, he is best known for his book Los orígenes de la obra de Larra.

Prof. Escobar leaves his wife Encarna Escobar and their two children. Those who knew, worked or studied with Prof. Escobar are invited to share their memories of the late professor at the ceremony.
