Wanted: all land and water fitness instructors, personal trainers, athletic therapists, kinesiologists, health care providers and anyone interested in health and wellness. Come and attend the largest land and water fitness conference in the world, to be held at York May 2-4.
Hosted by the University, the 2003 Future Wellness Conference will be presented jointly by York University Sport and Recreation and WaterART Fitness Training & Certification Programs.
An impressive list of presenters includes York Kinesiology & Health Science professors Greg Malszecki, Frances Flint and Michael Riddell, as well as sessional lecturer Veronica Jamnik (PhD candidate) and Simone Kaptein (PhD candidate). Other presenters include Rosie Carusi, coordinator, York Fitness & Lifestyles Programs, and Katharine McLarty, assistant, Fitness& Lifestyle Programs.
Those in quest of education and certification programs in this broad field will be able to get information on everything from personal training, group exercise and cycling programs to medical conditions, nutrition and weight management, pilates and yoga.
All certification programs come complete with a comprehensive manual and study guide questions. Continuing education credits (CECs) will be available for OKA, OASES, CATA, CanFitPro, OFC, ACE, AEA, AFAA, and WaterART.
Other highlights include the keynote speech May 2 by Dr. Julia Alleyne, right, who will explore the evolution of physical fitness into comprehensive wellness that pertains to personal, workplace and family health.
Alleyne is a sport medicine physician with a special interest in exercise prescription and lifestyle. Her academic research has been in the area of women and sport and she is dedicated to a team approach to patient care by working with fitness and health professionals.
Alleyne was a core team physician with Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City and she has served as a physician for many community fitness clubs and recreation centres. She is the president of the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine and the chief medical officer for Skate Canada.
