Award-winning poet A. F. Moritz will read from his latest book of poems, The Sentinel, as part of the Creative Writing Program Speaker Series, run through York’s Department of English.
Moritz will read on Monday, March 9 from 2:30 to 4pm at the Paul A. Delaney Gallery, 320 Bethune College, Keele campus.
Moritz has been nominated twice for a Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry, once in 2000 for Rest on the Flight into Egypt and a second time in 2008 for The Sentinel. For his most recent Governor General’s Literary nomination the judges commented: “The circumstances of being fully human are the hallmark of Moritz’s work – carried out with erudition and compassion for the human journey. Sources of many literatures combine in a unique voice that is both pan-American and global.”

Moritz has written over 10 books of poetry starting with his first, published in 1975. He has won the Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts & Letters, a Guggenheim Fellowship in poetry, the 2005 ReLit Award for best book of Canadian poetry for Night Street Repairs and Poetry magazine’s 2004 Bess Hokin Prize for his poem “The Sentinel”.

He is also the author of Houseboat on the Styx, Conflicting Desire and The End of the Age. Moritz is considered to have a magisterial voice and rare insight, and his supple craft is said to be on impressive display in his newest collection.
In addition, Moritz has translated seven books of poetry and is the co-author of several works of non-fiction. He has taught at the University of Toronto since 1986.
The reading is free and open to the public, no pre-registration is required. Light refreshments will be served.
