Political science Professor Christina Gabriel (BA ’86, MA ’88, PhD ’98) of Carleton University will talk about “The Care Circuit: Migration and the Political Economy of Globalized Carework” today as part of the Faculty of Environmental Studies Annual Lecture Series: Social Sustainability and Social/Spatial Justice.

The lecture will take place from 12:30 to 2:20pm in 140 Health, Nursing & Environmental Studies Building, Keele campus.
Gabriel‘s presentation will examine the dimensions and consequences of transnational carework and how issues of carework and social reproduction is taking place on a transnational scale, by considering the case of internationally educated registered nurses in Canada and the reliance on the labour of migrant women.
Her research draws on issues between social relations, including gender, race and nation, to examine ways in which the provisions of national migration policies are implicated in a process that (de)constructs skills of internationally educated nurses and the emergence of complex forms of hierarchical citizenship.
Gabriel is co-author of Selling Diversity: Immigration, Multiculturalism, Employment Equity and Globalization (Broadview Press, 2002) and is the co-editor of Governing International Labour Migration: Current Issues, Challenges & Dilemmas (Routledge, 2008).
