The York community is invited to walk or run for York students in the 2009 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
The York University Foundation is an official charity for this year’s event. By being part of Team YorkU, participants will be supporting York University’s Counselling & Disability Services which aligns disability and personal counselling units for students across the Keele and Glendon campuses.
Funds raised will go toward helping students who need personal, social, academic or disability-related assistance, providing equitable opportunities for academic success. In addition, it is a great opportunity to participate in a fun event while meeting other faculty, staff, alumni, students and new friends.
The marathon, hosted by Toronto Mayor David Miller, takes place Sunday, Sept. 27. The event starts and ends at Toronto City Hall (Bay & Queen Streets). There’s a distance suitable for everyone – participants can choose to run a full or half-marathon starting at 7:30am or they can run or walk the five-kilometre course starting at 8:15am.
Right: Participants in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon
Now in its 20th year, the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon aids numerous charities in achieving their fundraising goals. It offers participants plenty of perks, including free training programs, a pasta dinner the night before the run, a technical T-shirt (full and half-marathon runners only), 11 cheering centres with live bands, and a finisher’s medal. During the race, there will be many stations with water, Gatorade, snacks and first aid. There are also generous cash prizes to the charities with the biggest team, most dollars raised and most pledge dollars per participant – so your fundraising enthusiasm can really pay off!
Team YorkU runners and walkers will receive a reduced registration fee – $60 for the marathon and half-marathon or $30 for the five-kilometre – and a York University baseball cap. Team members can raise funds through their own free, personalized fundraising Web sites. Each member of the team must raise a minimum of $10. The team goal is to raise more than $5,000.
Anyone who would like to run or walk to raise funds for York students would be welcome on Team YorkU.
The first 10 people to contact Josh Neubauer, York University Foundation annual programs officer, by e-mail at neubauer@yorkfoundation.yorku.ca to confirm they want to join Team YorkU will receive free registration for their event, even if they have already registered.
