Gillian McCullough is new manager of interuniversity sport at York

Gillian McCullough has been appointed the new manager of interuniversity sport for York’s Sport & Recreation department.

McCullough is returning to her roots in Sport & Recreation at York, bringing with her a unique perspective as a former interuniversity athlete. A five-time all-Canadian and four-time academic all-Canadian, McCullough played in five national championships with the women’s field hockey team, winning silver and bronze medals, and captured three Ontario Women’s Interuniversity Athletic Association banners. She received the Gail Wilson Award as the top field hockey player in Canada in 1996, was York’s female athlete of the year in 1993 and was inducted into the York University Sport Hall of Fame in 2008.

Since her time as a student-athlete, McCullough has held numerous positions within the University, most recently as the associate director in the Advancement Office at Osgoode Hall Law School. McCullough played an integral role in the two-year Osgoode branding project and, in direct collaboration with the director of advancement, she was involved in the strategic planning and the rise of fundraising support by more than 50 per cent annually over the last four years.

Before stepping into that position, she was the director of Osgoode alumni relations for two years. It was her responsibility to provide the overall strategy for all alumni programs and events to promote active participation in the law school’s activities and to generate support that enhanced alumni relationships.

“I am thrilled that Gillian will be joining the sport program at York,” said Jennifer Myers, director of Sport & Recreation. “As a former York athlete, national team member and a Sport York Hall of Fame inductee, Gillian brings keen insight and personal experience about what it takes to be successful at a high performance level. Her leadership, strategic thinking and ability to forge strong partnerships will be a critical asset to moving Sport York ahead.”

“I feel like it really will be a homecoming of sorts as I am excited to return to Sport York,” said McCullough of her new position. “I am looking forward to continuing York’s long tradition of athletic excellence and leading the Lions to new success.”

As the manager of interuniversity sport, McCullough will be responsible for the management of sports, coaches and programs, and will also serve as a liaison with Ontario University Athletics and Canadian Interuniversity Sport. She will begin in this position on Sept. 22.
