The International Journal of Urban and Regional Research along with The City Institute at York University (CITY), will present a lecture by sociologist Harvey Molotch of New York University tomorrow, titled “City Durables: Encounters, Worries and Their Devices”.

The lecture will run from 6:30 to 7:30pm in the 7th Floor Lounge of the York Research Tower, Keele campus. It will be followed by the launch of three recent publications by CITY faculty members, hosted by York University Bookstores and CITY, from 7:30 to 9pm.
A professor of sociology and metropolitan studies, as well as social and cultural analysis, Molotch researches urban studies, including sidewalk interaction, urban growth and development, and urban environmental issues.
Molotch is the co-author of Urban Fortunes: The Political Economy of Place, recently released in a 20th anniversary edition. His most recent book, Where Stuff Comes From, deals with industrial design. He has also made contributions to the analysis of news media, the sociology of art and race studies.
Prior to teaching at New York University, Molotch was a Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics. He was also chair of sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He’s won a Robert & Helen Lynd Lifetime Achievement Award and a Robert E. Park Book Award from the Community & Urban Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA) and a Fred Buttel Distinguished Contribution Award from the Environment & Technology Section of the ASA. He’s also won a Komarovsky Book Award from the Eastern Sociological Society.
The book launch will feature the following publications: Networked Disease: Emerging Infections in the Global City (Wiley-Blackwell, 2008), co-edited by York environmental studies Professor Harris Ali and CITY Director Roger Keil; Changing Toronto: Governing Urban Neoliberalism (University of Toronto Press, 2009), co-authored by Julie-Anne Boudreau, a professor at the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique, Roger Keil and York social science Professor Douglas Young; and Leviathan Undone? Towards a Political Economy of Scale (University of British Columbia Press, 2009), co-edited by Roger Keil and Rianne Mahon, a sociology and anthropology professor at Carleton University.
