This week the English as a Second Language Open Learning Centre (ESL-OLC) opened its doors in Vanier College, Room 037.
This centre, funded by the Office of the VP Academic, consolidates and builds on the work that has been done for several years by the English as a Second Language Tutoring Centre operating out of the Centre for Academic Writing and Atkinson College, as well as at Glendon College.
The new Centre offers support to ALL registered York students, graduate and undergraduate, and regardless of faculty, in three ways:
— weekly workshops on topics related to the language needs of ESL students
— individual tutoring on specific aspects of spoken or written English
— computer-enhanced English language learning.
To access these services, students should go to www.yorku.ca/eslolc and follow the simple online instructions to register as a member. Then they will immediately be able to log in. Clicking on Sign Up Sessions will take them to a calendar where all the workshops and tutoring times for the next four week period are displayed. Sessions with space still available appear in green; those already booked are in red.
Students may sign up for up to two workshops and two tutorial sessions in any four week period. Alternatively, they may drop by Vanier 037 between the hours of 9.30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday for assistance in registering and signing up and/or to work independently on their English skills in the facility. Some tutoring hours are already scheduled for beyond 4.30 p.m. and on Saturday, and the facility will be open longer hours as soon as staffing arrangements can be made.
Glendon College students are also welcome to attend the workshops on the main campus – they will be held in Founders 047 every Thursday afternoon from 3:45 – 5:15 pm. In addition, individual tutoring and workshops are available at Glendon at which all York students are welcome. An electronic sign-up for these sessions is in the works. The tutoring office will be in Hilliard Residence, D117, with tutoring available Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 am – 1 pm.
