Synopsis of the 378th York University Board of Governors meeting

At its 378th meeting held on Monday, April 28, 2003, the Board of Governors of York University:

  • Received an announcement from President Marsden that York had been awarded funding for a new general academic building in the recent SuperBuild competition;
  • Received a presentation from Professor Patricia Murray on the new identity for Sports & Recreation at York;
  • Approved, on the recommendation of the Executive Committee, the appointment of Professor John Heddle, emeritus professor of Biology, as a trustee of the Pension Fund Board of Trustees (as a nominee of the York University Retirees Association), for a three-year term effective July 1, 2003;
  • Approved the following items, on the recommendation of the Finance & Staff Resources Committee:
    • The Budget Plan for 2003-2004 to 2005-2006;
    • Window replacement, 6 Assiniboine Road, at a cost of approximately $630,000;
    • Window replacement in the Wood Residence, Glendon College at a cost of approximately $750,000;
    • The manufacture and installation of the components of the University’s new exterior signage system at a cost of approximately $725,000;
    • In principle, proceeding with a $100-million academic capital expansion program comprising a general academic building, a performance building and associated “ripple” renovations;
    • The budget of $70 million for construction of the general academic building, as the first project of the overall capital program contingent upon the receipt of the SuperBuild grant;
    • The awarding of a stipulated lump sum contract to Kenaidan Contracting Limited in the amount of $26.3 million for the construction of the new undergraduate residence;
  • Reapproved, on the recommendation of the Audit Committee, the Occupational Health and Safety Policy;
  • Approved, on the recommendation of the Audit Committee, the:
    • Annual Report on Health & Safety;
    • Risk Management Policy for York University;
  • Approved, on the recommendation of the University Advancement Committee, the naming of the face building on the Arboretum Parking Garage as the William Small Centre, in honour of the late William Small;
  • Received information reports from the Executive, Academic Resources, Audit, Finance & Staff Resources and Land Use Committees.
