Hydro phase-in sparks cost fears

Clive Holloway, professor emeritus of chemistry in York’s Faculty of Science & Engineering and a self-described “senior”, has crunched some numbers and is not comforted by the results, wrote the Toronto Star Oct. 30, in a story about new premiums for hydro usage at peak hours.

Holloway said peak and mid-peak hours total 14, and the cost of both represent a hike of 33 to 50 per cent over the current rate of about six cents per kilowatt-hour. During the 10 off-peak hours electricity is about 25 per cent less.

New report imagines a greener Vancouver

The City of Vancouver released its Greenest City Action Team’s 10-year plan last week in a report titled Vancouver 2020: A Bright Green Future, wrote Vancouver’s Westender Oct. 29.

Pedestrian City, a pedestrian advocacy initiative founded by York grad Natalie Ethier (MES ’07), as well as the Vancouver Public Space Network, have started to explore these and other goals through “green mapping sessions”, the first of which was held Oct. 22 in Mount Pleasant.

For Ethier, who moved to Vancouver from Toronto this past spring, it’s an extension of her previous work with Pedestrian City, which she started as part of her master’s degree in York’s Faculty of Environmental Studies.

Children stretch their legs with yoga

Janet Williams (BEd ’93) had barely started studying yoga when her instructor pegged her as a future teacher of the centuries-old posture and breathing exercises, wrote Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Post Oct. 30.

Her teacher’s prediction was accurate. Williams started teaching yoga in 1996 and has studied the art not only in Canada, but also in Australia, England and Spain.

Earlier this decade, friend and former schoolmate Gratia Giovanatti suggested that with Williams’ educational background – she’s also a York University Faculty of Education graduate – she pen her own yoga book.

It took eight long years, but her first work is now published. What I See, I Can Be: A Guided Yoga Flow for Children was released Sept. 1 through her own publishing effort, Light Connections Press.
