In 2009, when the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) announced transit fare hikes, the York Federation of Students and the Glendon College Student Union, along with student unions from across the GTA, mobilized and established the Fair Student Fares campaign.
Students collected more than 10,000 petition signatures and presented deputations to convince the TTC that postsecondary students were in need of a discounted transit program. The result was a $99 postsecondary student discounted Metropass.
Effective September 2010, the TTC will be selling TTC Metropasses to university and college students at the student rate of $99 per month. Students will now be able to purchase the discounted Metropasses from any TTC ticket agent.
Students must obtain a TTC photo identification card in order to purchase the discounted Metropass at the student rate. York’s Parking & Transportation Services will continue to sell TTC Metropasses to faculty and staff but will no longer sell Metropasses to students.
