York University to phase out sales of bottled water by 2015

Alastair Woods, vice-president of campaigns & advocacy for the York Federation of Students, and York University President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri, spoke to The Weather Network April 17 about York’s plans to phase out bottled water by 2015. “This has been probably three years in the making. It’s actually part of a national campaign that’s run jointly by the Canadian Federation of Students, the Polaris Institute and the Sierra Youth Coalition,” explained Woods. “Just trying to get campuses, both college and university campuses, to go bottled water free.” Students on campus are given reusable water bottles and here’s the coolest part: Hydration stations are being set up so that free drinking water is made available at all times. “As we go through the program, they’re going to be everywhere – they’ll be all over the place,” said Shoukri. “So that nobody will have any problem finding a hydration station in order to fill their bottles.” Read full story and view video.

Grateful grads have organized a dinner for 74-year-old “Coach Cos” in support of York football on May 11 at The Carlu in downtown Toronto. “It was never all about football with the coach, it was about life, the quality of the man you were, the man you could become,” said former all-Canadian defensive back Angelo Kioussis. “He prepared us to look at the world as an opportunity, how we managed the challenges in front of us, and presented us with opportunities to succeed.” Read full story.

Schulich-GMR B-school to be named ‘Schulich School of Business – GMR Campus, Hyderabad’
The Schulich-GMR Business school, which was announced in 2010, will start its management program from September next year, and will be named “Schulich School of Business – GMR Campus, Hyderabad, York University in Toronto (Canada)”, reported India’s mbauniverse.com April 18. “The management programs at the campus will start by September,” said Dr. V Raghunathan, CEO, GMR Varalakshmi Foundation.
