Car accident takes life of York student

Sylvia Maka, a third-year student in York’s Faculty of Health, died Aug. 9 in a car accident in Poland. She was 19.

Ms. Maka was enrolled in a double major – psychology and communication studies – at York. Two of her cousins were also killed in the accident. The York flag will fly at half-mast from sunrise today until 1pm Wednesday in commemoration of Ms. Maka.

Ms. Maka is the daughter of Anna (Jozef) and Zbigniew (Krystyna), the sister of Melissa, Aneta, Joanna and Pawel, and aunt of Alex. She will be remembered by her family and many friends, aunts, uncles and cousins from the United States, Canada and Poland.

A trust fund has been set up for the Maka family at the St. Stanislaus-St. Casimir’s Polish Parishes Credit Union Ltd., 117152-Pomoc dla Rodziny Maka (Help for Maka’s Family). Memorial donations made to the trust fund would be appreciated. Online condolences may be placed at the Courtice Funeral Chapel.
