Poet Karen Solie, the Canadian winner of the 2010 Griffin Poetry Prize, will read from her winning collection Pigeon this Wednesday at York as part of the Studio Reading Series.
Pigeon (House of Anansi Press, 2010) is Solie’s third collection of poems. Her first, Short Haul Engine (Brick Books, 2001), won the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize and was shortlisted for the 2002 Griffin Poetry Prize by The Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry, the ReLit Award and the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award by the League of Canadian Poets. Her second, Modern and Normal (Brick Books, 2005), was shortlisted for the Trillium Book Award for Poetry.
Solie, whose poetry, fiction and non-fiction has appeared in numerous journals in Canada and the United States, will read Oct. 27 at 4pm at 320 Bethune College in the Paul Delaney Gallery, Keele campus.
Before moving to Toronto, Solie was a reporter for the Lethbridge Herald in Alberta, a job which she says fed her fascination with luck and choice.
Studio is an international, peer-reviewed, online literary magazine based at York and published twice a year. It seeks to present outstanding fiction, non-fiction, poetry, visual art and critical writing from Canada and abroad, while offering an innovative and unprecedented focus on the interdisciplinary relationships between education, cultural studies, literature and other art forms.
The Studio Reading Series presents important Canadian and international writers of fiction and poetry once a month at York with the support and sponsorship of Stong College, Founders College, Winters College, New College, Vanier College and Calumet College.
