The York University Lions men’s track and field team finished in fourth place at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships at the Toronto Track & Field Centre this past weekend, while the women ended up sixth.
The University of Windsor Lancers both repeated as champions. The men won their 13th straight OUA title while the women won their second consecutive banner.
The star of the day was third-year York sprinter Dontae Richards-Kwok, who earned three gold medals to go along with another he won on the opening day of competition. After winning the 300 metres on Friday, Richards-Kwok took top honours in the 60 metres with a time of 6.76 seconds.
He then teamed up with Ingvar Moseley, Olu Ogunde and David Mayer to win the gold medal in the 4 x 200m relay, and later in the day ran the anchor leg for the gold-medal winning Lions in the 4 x 400 metres relay. Women’s volleyball Lions finish fourth at OUA championships
The York University Lions women’s volleyball team finished fourth at the OUA championships Saturday after a 3-1 loss to the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees in the bronze-medal game at the W.F. Mitchell Centre in Guelph.
All four sets were close as the East Division rivals battled for third place. In the end, the Gee-Gees won 30-28, 25-23, 24-26, 25-21.
In their final game of the year, four Lions scored at least 10 points in the game. Third-year middle Kristina Vlcek led the way with nine kills and 12 points, while team captain Sarah Sutton had 11 points on 11 kills and added seven digs. More details.
The Lions were relegated to the bronze-medal game after dropping a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-13) decision to the University of Western Ontario Mustangs in the semifinals on Friday night.
Vlcek, who returned from injury to play in the match, led the Lions in scoring with 13 points. She also had a team-high 11 kills.
Sutton and Stephanie Green were both second in team scoring with five points, while setter Gina Morphy had a team-high 19 assists. More details.
Men’s basketball Lions fall to Rams in playoff contest
The York University Lions men’s basketball team was defeated by the host Ryerson University Rams 80-70 in a first-round playoff game at Kerr Hall Gym on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
Second-year York guard Ostap Choliy and third-year guard David Tyndale each recorded 19 points in the loss to lead all Lions. Rookie forward Christian Coldea made the most of his 11 minutes on court, knocking down 10 points on an efficient 5-of-8 from the floor. More details.
Women’s basketball Lions eliminated from playoffs by Gee-Gees
The York University Lions women’s basketball team was eliminated from the playoffs on Wednesday by the host University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, who won by a score of 67-53 in the first round of the post-season.
York held the lead early in the game as the Gee-Gees struggled to get their offence going. However, a big steal by Gee-Gees point guard Kimberly Cupid helped to turn the momentum in favour of the home team.
From there, Gee-Gees star Hannah Sunley-Paisley picked up the pace, knocking down several baskets for Ottawa and giving her team a 21-13 lead after the first quarter. More details.
