Balloons, banners and streamers will decorate the walls, Lions will walk the halls, and red and white York pride will be on display everywhere on Thursday as York celebrates its 52nd birthday.
The festivities will include free cake and cupcake distribution from 11am to 5pm at the East Bear Pit. The official cake-cutting ceremony will take place in the Student Centre Food Court from noon to 1pm, followed by a dazzling stage show, showcasing students performing their hearts out for the University they love, from 2 to 4pm.
In addition, York is U volunteers will be on the lookout for anyone wearing red or York gear. If you are spotted wearing either, you will receive a 52nd birthday gift.

Bonne Fête celebrations will also take place at York’s Glendon campus. Cake-cutting ceremony and cupcake distribution will start at noon at the Breeze way. “It has been an incredible journey planning this event,” says Paulina Su, york is U student relations director in charge of the birthday celebrations. “York has given me so many great opportunities. I am honoured to give back to York by planning its birthday party!” Second-year finance major and York’s birthday co-ordinator, Raymond Chan, said, “It’s going to be a spectacular event. I can hardly wait.”
The York History Timeline will also be on display in Vari Hall again this year. “It is important to not only foster school spirit but to also learn how far York has come, so we can admire the past and look forward to the future,” says Sara Gedara, third-year economics major and York birthday coordinator.
With more than 6,000 students expected to enjoy a piece of York’s birthday cake, this event is shaping up to be one of the biggest one-day events of the year.
