Osgoode Professor Mary Condon has been appointed vice-chair of the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC), the regulatory body responsible for overseeing the capital markets in Ontario.
During the term of her appointment, which will run from June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2013, Condon will be on a leave of absence from the law school.
In his announcement of her appointment, OSC Chair Howard Wetston said Condon’s “extensive legal expertise and significant experience in investor initiatives, adjudication and corporate governance will greatly assist the commission in its work to fulfil its mandate in the public interest.”
Condon has been a part-time member of the OSC since April 2008. She has served on the OSC’s Adjudicative Committee and on the Governance and Nominating Committee, most recently as chair of that committee, and was actively involved in policy- and rule-making. She will continue to be executive sponsor of the Investor Advisory Panel.
In addition, she is a member of the board of trustees of the York University Pension Fund and is a member of the Investor Education Fund (IEF) Board of Directors. The IEF is a nonprofit organization funded by settlements and fines from OSC enforcement proceedings.
A leading academic in the area of securities law, Condon taught three securities law courses at Osgoode this past academic year, two in the Juris Doctor program and one in the Professional Master of Law (LLM) program specializing in securities law, which she also directs. She also did some other teaching in the Administrative Law LLM and in a continuing law education program on securities law. She currently supervises three PhD students and one LLM student and is a member of the Faculty Recruitment Committee.
