The Centre for Aboriginal Student Services (CASS) held its annual Welcome Feast recently with guests being treated to a sustainable feast of Three Sisters soup, comprised of corn, beans and squash.
The story behind the soup is that the three main crops were farmed by the Haudenosaune, who grew them in a strategically sustainable manner. As the cornstalks grew, the bean plants climbed the stalks, and the squash grew beneath, inhibiting weeds and keeping the soil moist under the shade 
of their broad leaves. This method allowed the soil to remain fertile for several decades.

In addition to the soup, bannock, freshly squeezed strawberry juice, coffee and tea were also served to the crowd at the Welcome Feast. The event welcomed returning and new students, providing a place for them to connect and network with others, including the staff and faculty that will support them during their learning journey on campus.
The next gathering will be at the upcoming York University Conference on Aboriginal Activities Now (YUCAAN) Sept. 26.
