The Lancers, ranked fourth in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West Division, provided some of the toughest competition for the Lions thus far, but the No. 2 nationally-ranked Lions found a way to win to keep their undefeated season intact. The Lions are now 7-0-1 on the year and are the only team in the West without a loss.
Pena put a free kick behind Lancer goalkeeper Dejo Olabegi to complete the hat-trick after the Lancers had twice tied the contest. More details on the York Lions website.
The win over the Lancers came two days after a 1-1 draw with the Western University Mustangs on Friday night in London, Ont. Pena score the lone goal in that contest as well. More details.
Women’s soccer Lions down Lancers 3-1 in Windsor
The York University Lions women’s soccer team continued its undefeated season on Sunday in Windsor, Ont., earning a 3-1 victory over the winless University of Windsor Lancers.
The Lions’ found the board first, scoring in the 26th minute off a goal by second-year midfielder Shannon Wood. In the 41st minute, Navneet Aujla, extended the Lions’ lead to 2-0, which they held at the half.
The Lancers managed to make a game of it, with Gadeer Sobh beating all-star Lions keeper Sarah Fiorini on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute, drawing the Lancers within one with just over 15 minutes of regulation time remaining. More details.
In their other contest of the weekend, the Lions earned a scoreless draw with the Western University Mustangs. Fiorinihad an impressive 12-save performance to earn the shutout in her first start of the season, including three each from striker Lauren Winquist and midfielder Hannah Kennedy.
The Lions, for their part, managed to fire off eight shots on the Mustang net, including three from midfielder Rita Keimakh and four from forward Nour Ghoneim.
Warriors hold on for narrow win over football Lions
The York University Lions football team played its Homecoming game at York Stadium on Saturday, against the visiting University of Waterloo Warriors and saw their last-minute comeback fall short in a 23-22 loss.
The win was Waterloo’s first since 2009, bring their record to 1-3 on the season. The Lions are also 1-3 after the defeat.
With Waterloo leading 23-11 after three quarters, the Lions mounted an exciting fourth-quarter response. Quarterback Myles Gibbon found Jonelle Tolbert for a 24-yard touchdown pass, Tolbert’s second of the game, with 4:30 remaining in the frame. More details.
Rugby Lions crush Excaliubr, improve to .500
The York University Lions women’s rugby team dominated the visiting Trent University Excalibur in a 77-10 victory on their home field on Friday night.
The result was never in doubt as the Lions scored early and often in front of a large group of fans in attendance for the evening contest.
The win was the Lions’ second in a row, and in the last two weeks they have now outscored their opponents 132-10. With the win, the Lions improved to 2-2 on the season and are in second place in the OUA Russell Division with 12 points. More details.
Field hockey Lions top Gaels for first win
The York University Lions field hockey team earned its first win of the season on Sunday, recording a 2-0 victory over the Queen’s University Gaels at Varsity Centre in Toronto.
The result was an important one for the Lions as it put them into a tie with Queen’s for fifth place in the OUA standings. The game was their third of the weekend, as they also lost a narrow 2-1 decision to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday morning and took a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the defending OUA champion Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon. Overall, the Lions have a record of 1-4 on the season.
Against Queen’s, the Lions scored both their goals in the first half as Adriana Fernandes and Megan Connolly each netted one on a corner shot. More details.
Solid finish for cross country Lions and Western International
The York University Lions men’s and women’s cross country teams were busy competing at the 38th annual Western International Cross Country Invitational at the Thames Valley Golf Course in London, Ont. on Saturday.
For the second straight meet, Giulia Ferrante was the top Lion finishing in 79th place with a time of 20:17 on the women’s side. The men’s team finished in 13th place, with Esteban Clavijo as the top runner for the Lions finishing in 90th place with a time of 28:06. More details.
