Thanks to the Schulich Graduate Business Council and graduate students at Schulich, many people in northern Toronto will have food for the holiday season.
Schulich Graduate Business Council volunteers collect food for the North York Harvest Food Bank
Although the Schulich Graduate Business Council has been organizing food drives for annually for some time, this year’s haul of 3,000 pounds of food is more than double what was collected last year, says Akshay Rumalla, a MBA candidate at York’s Schulich School of Business. And all that food was collected in a rather short time – one week, from Dec. 3 to 10.
Everything from cases of chicken noodle soup, baked beans, apple sauce, rice, pasta and more were donated to the 
North York Harvest Food Bank.
“As the director of community relations for the Graduate Business Council, I started this year’s drive with a theme inspired by the Karo Group that said, ‘giving back is moving forward’. With this thought in mind, we promoted the food drive at Schulich,” says Rumalla.
“We never had a target number in mind when we started the drive, but doubling last year’s donation was overwhelming for all of us. We hope our donation will feed those in need and add a lot of smiles this holiday season.”
The food will be placed in hampers and delivered to those in need from families, single parents and newcomers to the recently unemployed and those living with disabilities.
The 3,000 pounds of food collected by students will be part of the 1.7 million pounds of food expected to be distributed throughout the year.
