York alumna Aileen Ashman (LLM ’97) has been appointed assistant vice-president human resources, effective Feb. 4. The announcement was made by York Vice-President Finance & Administration Gary Brewer.
Over the past 15 years, Ashman has held senior leadership positions in human resources and employee relations in several large organizations in the broader public sector, including her current role as director of human resources for the Toronto Police Service.

A graduate of York University, Ashman holds a master of laws degrees from the Osgoode Hall Law School. Her career includes positions as a labour lawyer, arbitration officer and chief negotiator and she brings a strong track record of providing strategic leadership in program development and service delivery in all areas of human resources. Ashman has experience with both centralized and decentralized HR organizational models.
As York University’s assistant vice-president of human resources, Ashman will report directly to Brewer. She will have responsibility for leadership of Non-Academic Employee Relations; Learning & Development; Job Evaluation & Compensation; Pension & Benefits; Payroll and HR Information Systems; Workforce Planning, Recruitment & Equity; Occupational Health and Safety; and the Employee Well-being Office.
