The York University Lions football team was defeated by a score of 33-7 by the No. 4 nationally ranked University Guelph Gryphons at Alumni Stadium in Guelph, Ont., on Friday night.
The Lions had their chances in the contest but were ultimately unable to finish drives with scores. They matched Guelph on first downs, with 22 apiece, and put up 383 yards on a defence that was averaging only 269.4 per game entering the contest. The Gryphons took advantage of a young Lions defence to amass 518 yards and made good on four of their five red-zone chances.
The loss drops the Lions to 2-4 on the year, while the Gryphons kept their undefeated record intact at 6-0.
Running back Errol Brooks had another strong outing, picking up 109 yards on 15 carries and scoring York’s lone touchdown of the game, an 18-yard rush early in the fourth quarter that cut Guelph’s lead to 20-7. The score capped off a short three-play, 39-yard drive that began after third-year defensive back Cory Bellerdine picked off Guelph quarterback Jazz Lindsey. McGee’s OT winner leads men’s hockey Lions over Ridgebacks
Third-year centre Tyler McGee scored the game winner with just six seconds left in overtime to give the York University Lions men’s hockey team a 3-2 victory over the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks in their season opener in Oshawa, Ont., on Saturday night.
McGee took a pass from team captain Jesse Messier and John de Gray and put the puck past UOIT goaltender Colin Dzijacky just before the final whistle to give the Lions the important second point in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West standings.
The two teams traded goals throughout the contest. The Lions got on the board first late in the first period when Andrew Clouthier found the back of the net, with assists to McGee and Paul Sohor. More details.
Stathopulos’ three points powers women’s hockey Lions’ comeback over Rams
An explosion of offence in the second period stunned the Ryerson University Rams on Saturday as the York University Lions women’s hockey team defeated the Rams 3-2, opening their season with a victory.
The win was anchored by fourth-year forward Lisa Stathopulos‘ three-point performance, who had a goal and two assists in the game.
The first period was dominated by Ryerson, as their 17 first period shots overwhelmed the Lions early. Blair Malthaner would open the scoring for Ryerson, sneaking one past Lions goaltender Megan Lee nine minutes into the game. More details.
Men’s soccer Lions lose first game at home since 2009
The No. 1 nationally ranked York University Lions men’s soccer team was looking to avenge their only loss as they took on the No. 7 McMaster University Marauders on Saturday at York Stadium. The rematch was bittersweet as York fell once again to the Marauders by a score of 1-0. The loss was the first at home since Sept. 29, 2009.

Continuing their sensational play from the past few games, York looked incredibly strong from the opening whistle. Though the majority of the first half was played under a draw, the Lions had several chances in front of the Marauder net that they were unable to convert into goals.
The Lions’ pressure had the Marauders boiling over, resulting in a yellow card in the 37th minute of play. As the Lions looked to capitalize on McMaster’s misstep, they committed a costly error of their own. York midfielder Arthur Casupanan scored a goal on his own net while attempting to defend a McMaster attacker, conceding a 1-0 deficit before half. More details.
Marauders come back to defeat women’s soccer Lions
The York University Lions women’s soccer team let a 1-0 lead slip away on Saturday, falling to the McMaster University Marauders by a score of 2-1 at York Stadium.
The three points were big for the Marauders, who now hold a three-point lead on the Lions after the two teams entered the contest tied in the standings. The loss drops the Lions to 3-3-5 on the season, while the Marauders improved to 4-2-5.

The Lions came sprinting out of the gate and their speed advantage was evident from the beginning. Utilizing short passes and the speed of their forwards, York’s first chance came just 11 minutes into the game with Vanessa Sansone splitting the McMaster defence and rifling a hard shot attempt into the arms of goaltender Brittany Duffey.
Sansone would attempt to convert another shot in the 25th minute on a hard strike off of a breakaway, but Duffey was there to record the save once again. She would finish with eight on the day.More details.
Women’s rugby Lions fall to Marauders, finish third in Russell Division
The York University Lions women’s rugby team ended the regular season on Sunday with a 64-7 loss to the McMaster University Marauders in Hamilton, Ont., to finish in third place in the OUA Russell Division standings.
The loss drops the team record to 2-3 on the season, and the Lions will finish in the same place as last season. They will get an immediate opportunity to shake off the loss to the Marauders next week, when the two teams meet again in the first round of the playoffs.
Kadi Koroma scored the lone try for the Lions at the 28-minute mark of the first half, her first try of the season. Alexis Boltsis added the two points on the conversion. More details.
Cross country Lions finish second, fourth at Don Mills Open
The York University Lions women’s cross-country team finished in second place at the Don Mills Open in Waterloo, Ont., on Saturday, while the men’s team finished in fourth place.
Runners on both squads just missed out on top-10 finishes at the meet. In the 4.85km women’s race, rookie Maria Markovac crossed the line in 11th place in a time of 18:31. She has been the top Lions finisher at every meet so far this season.
Fourth-year runner Esteban Clavijo also finished in 11th place in the men’s 7.5km race, his best result of the season to date. His time was 23:49, which was three seconds faster than teammate Muad Issa, who finished 12th. It was a strong result for the second-year runner, who was making his season debut at the meet after an injury kept him out of action until this weekend. More details.
Field hockey Lions tie Waterloo, fall to Queen’s
The York University Lions field hockey team squared off against the University of Waterloo Warriors and Queen’s University Gaels in a pair of games this weekend in Kingston, Ont., earning a 1-1 draw with the Warriors and falling 4-1 to the Gaels.
The Lions earned one point with the tie but saw their record fall to 0-7-2 on the season. They are currently at the bottom of the OUA standings with two points.
Melissa Lewis would open the scoring for the Warriors early in the first game, draining a goal in the 12th minute of action. Waterloo would ride the momentum for the remainder of the half, holding the 1-0 lead into the break.
The second half would see the tides shift when Sasha Kulesh erased the one goal deficit in the 63rd minute of action. Neither team were able to score the go-ahead goal as the 1-1 draw remained as the final tally. More details.
