Lesley Wheeler, the Henry S. Fox Professor of English at Washington and Lee University in Virginia, will be visiting and speaking at York next Monday as part of the Creative Writing Speaker Series.
The talk will take place Feb. 6, from 1 to 2:30pm, at 320 Bethune College, Keele campus.
Her most recent collection of poetry, Heterotopia (Barrow Street Inc., 2010), won the Barrow Street Press Poetry Prize and was a finalist for the Library of Virginia Award in poetry. Wheeler is also the author of the poetry collection, Heathen (C & R Press, 2009) and the scholarly book Voicing American Poetry: Sound and Performance from the 1920s to the Present (Cornell University Press, 2008), which was shortlisted for the Modernist Studies Association Book prize. She also co-edited Letters to the World: Poems from the Wom-po Listserv (Red Hen Press, 2008).
Wheeler has held several fellowships, including those from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Foundation and the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Wheeler also writes a blog on poetry, conversation and community at thecavethehive.wordpress.com.
She is currently at work on a forthcoming collection, Signal to Noise, as well as a scholarly book, Poetry, Conversation, Community in the Twenty-First Century, a study of the networks sustaining contemporary poetry. Wheeler teaches courses in 20th- and 21st-century poetry and creative writing workshops at Washington and Lee University.
