George Roter, co-founder of Engineers Without Borders, will give the Ernest C. Mercier Lecture in Entrepreneurial Science Oct. 30.
The title of his talk is “The Mirage of Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Power: What I’ve Learned About 21st-Century Challenges and the Organizations and People Who Can Rise to Meet Them.”
The lecture starts at 6:30pm in the McEwen Auditorium, Seymour Schulich Building, Keele campus, and will be followed by a Q-and-A. It is hosted by the Lassonde School of Engineering.
Roter and Parker Mitchell founded Engineers Without Borders in 2000 when the two were engineering students at the University of Waterloo. The non-profit organization harnesses Canadian engineering creativity, technical skills and a problem-solving approach to address the root causes of poverty in rural Africa. Since its inception, it has dispatched almost 150 volunteers to 25 countries to find innovative ways for the poor to access clean water, generate an income from humble farms, and access critical infrastructure and services. Across Canada, EWB has a network of 34 professional and student chapters.
Roter has been recognized as one of Canada’s leaders in the non-profit sector. In 2004, he was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40.
