The York University Lions men’s soccer team was defeated by a score of 1-0 on kicks (5-4) by the tournament host University of New Brunswick (UNB) Varsity Reds in the bronze-medal match of the 2013 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championship, Sunday afternoon at BMO Centre.
It marks the second fourth-place finish for the squad in the last seven years, as the OUA-champion Lions finished in the same place in 2007, which was also the last time they won the provincial banner. They have also won two national championships in that stretch (2008, 2010).
In Sunday’s shootout session, both teams scored on their first two attempts before UNB goalkeeper Aaron McMurray gave his team the edge with a save against Mark-Anthony Kaye. With the score at 4-4 after nine shooters, Yousuf Mohammad had a chance to seal the victory for the locals but he was robbed by all-Canadian goalie Sotiri Varlokostas.
UNB regained the edge right away, however, thanks to another McMurray save, this one on Carlos Nogueira, which set the table for Yassin Shehab El Din, who buried the game-winner in the bottom right corner. More details on the York Lions website.
Women’s volleyball Lions top Paladins, extend win streak to seven
The perfect season of the York University Lions women’s volleyball team remained unscathed Saturday as the squad disposed of the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins in straight sets in Kingston, Ont.
York was in control throughout, winning the first two sets 25-14 and 25-16, and claiming the third and final set by a score of 25-20. The win improved the team’s record to an impressive 7-0 on the year to remain in first place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East standings. More details.
One day earlier, the Lions earned their sixth win of the season with a 3-1 victory over the Queen’s University Gaels. The Gaels got off to a great start in the match, taking the first set by a score of 25-22. After York took the first two points, Queen’s rattled off five straight to build an early lead. The two teams then kept pace with one another as neither team was able to put together a streak longer than three. The Gaels hung on thanks to their early advantage to take the first set.
The Lions quickly took over the match after that point, however, winning the next two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-14 to take a 2-1 lead. More details.
Men’s volleyball Lions sweep Paladins for sixth win
The York University Lions men’s volleyball team claimed another victory Saturday, defeating the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins in straight sets in Kingston, Ont., for their sixth win of the season.
Looking in top form from the first touch, York would win 25-15, 25-17 and 25-18 to prevail untarnished. The Lions now have a record of 6-2 on the year following the win, placing them atop of the OUA standings with 12 points. More details.
The previous day, the Lions held on for a five-set win over the Queen’s University Gaels. Every set was close in the rematch from last year’s OUA quarter-final, which the Lions won also in five sets.
The Lions won the first two sets of the match by scores of 25-23 and 25-22 to take a commanding lead, but the Gaels would not back down and they rallied in the next two sets, winning both by the same 25-23 score. More details.
Men’s basketball Lions defeat Mustangs in lopsided win
The York University Lions men’s basketball team posted its most lopsided victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Western University Mustangs by a score of 84-64 at Alumni Hall in London, Ont.
Third-year guard Richard Iheadindu had a tremendous game with 24 points, five rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
Also impressive were fifth-year forward Aaron Rados and third-year forward Ryan Ejim each contributed 18 points to the win. Rados also had six rebounds, two assists and four steals and Ejim had a double-double with 10 rebounds off the bench. More details.
On Friday night, the Lions were defeated by the No. 7 nationally ranked University of Windsor Lancers by a score of 78-70 at the St. Denis Centre. Windsor took control early, converting on many of their scoring opportunities in the first half and jumping out to a 39-22 advantage at the break. More details.
Men’s hockey Lions snap skid with win over Paladins
The York University Lions men’s hockey team snapped a four-game slide Saturday, claiming victory over the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins by a score of 3-1 at Constantine Arena in Kingston, Ont.
The win improves the Lions record to 6-4-0 on the year, while the Paladins remain winless.
Two different players for the Lions had multiple point nights, with captain and leading scorer Jesse Messier notching a goal and an assist and teammate Troy Barss recording two helpers. More details.
On Friday night, the Lions came back from two goals down but were ultimately defeated by a score of 4-3 by the Carleton University Ravens in Ottawa. The Lions scored the opening goal of the game just 5:23 into the first period on Chad Hohmann‘s first of the season, but that lead was short-lived as the Ravens scored the next three goals, including both in the second period, to take a commanding 3-1 lead into the final frame. Mustangs down women’s basketball Lions
The York University Lions women’s basketball team was defeated by a score of 77-49 by the Western University Mustangs at Alumni Hall in London, Ont., on Sunday.
It was a tale of two halves in the game as Western started out strong in the opening quarter, taking a 25-16 lead before York outscored Western in the second to cut the Mustangs lead to 36-32 at halftime. More details.
Earlier in the week, the Lions were defeated by a score of 82-29 by the three-time defending CIS champion Windsor University Lancers.
For York, forward Erin Sarapnickas was the standout, contributing 11 points, one rebound and a blocked shot. Teammate Courtney Osborne added five points and five rebounds of her own. More details.
Ridgebacks shut out women’s hockey Lions
Goaltender Tori Campbell recorded her first career shut out to lead the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks to a 3-0 victory over the York University Lions on Saturday afternoon at Campus Ice Centre.
UOIT scored one goal in each period, all of them early in the frames. The Ridgebacks opened the scoring less than six minutes into the first, and despite getting outshot 10-8 in the period, held a 1-0 advantage going into the second. More details.
