Sexual violence is as complex as it is common. That’s why an Understanding Sexual Violence workshop is being offered exclusively to the York community.
The prevalence of sexual violence commands an understanding of its complexity to fight it more effectively. Defined by historical, legal, social, cultural and medical classifications, people are often lost in understanding how sexual violence operates. Furthermore, it is often difficult to adequately address it.
Yet, better comprehension of sexual violence is crucial for developing a vision of eradicating sexual violence and for creating holistic and cohesive responses across campus divisions.
The Understanding Sexual Violence workshop will offer a “crash course” in understanding sexual violence. Workshop participants will:
- review the historical background of sexual violence;
- understand the various definitions of sexual violence and its modes of operation;
- identify key concepts such as rape culture and sexual consent; and
- identify the obstacles that prevent its eradication.
The workshop is three hours long. It is exclusive to York’s community members and specifically designed with the community’s unique needs in mind. It is especially recommended to all who deal with safety, security and student services.
The workshop will be offered on Thursday, March 13, from 1 to 4pm, 305 York Lanes, Keele campus.
The workshop is offered for free, but advance registration is required. Register with Noa Ashkenazi at noaa@yorku.ca. Indicate the date you are interested in attending and whether you prefer the basic or extended workshop.
