Candlelight vigil for alumnus Wednesday

York University alumnus Ali Mustafa (BA Hons. ’09), a photojournalist recently working in Syria, was killed Sunday, March 9 during an airstrike. He was 29.

Mustafa, who studied political science at York, also worked in Egypt and was reportedly in Turkey before crossing into Syria where he was covering the civil war in the city of Aleppo.

He was known by family, friends and colleagues as being passionate about social justice and trying to bring injustice to light.

A candlelight vigil will be held for him on Wednesday, March 12 at 4pm in Vari Hall, Keele campus.

A vigil for the Toronto-born freelance photographer was also held Sunday in Toronto. Some 100 people attended.

Mustafa’s photos have appeared in various publications, including The Guardian, European PressPhoto Agency and CTV.
