The York U safety app features an easy to navigate homepage

The York U mobile safety app is now even better than ever. Not only is it now available for Blackberry 10 users to download, but is has two new features – push notifications and a safety alert that will allow the University to communicate campus emergencies directly and immediately to users.

The free safety app and new features are available on iPhone, Android and Blackberry 10 devices for all York students, staff and faculty.

Push notifications allow users to receive a message on their device, similar to the look of a text message, in the case of an emergency. The push notifications will only be used for emergency messaging and are enabled from the time the safety app is downloaded (it is the default setting),

The safety alert will appear at the top of the app when it’s launched and will notify users of the status of a safety issue.

In addition to these two new features, the safety app enables users to make direct calls to York University’s Security Services or 911 emergency services. There is also a toolbox which allows users to email non-urgent matters to York Security and to report light outages.

The app has links to maps of the Keele campus, goSAFE and Village Shuttle information and schedules, and information about the Centre for Human Rights and the Sexual Assault Survivors Support Line & Leadership (SASSL).

The app is part of York University’s Safer Together campaign, which represents the University’s commitment to building a safer campus and community together with its faculty, staff and students. The objective of the safety campaign is to foster continued and shared engagement in community safety.

To date, the app has been downloaded 13,000 times. Don’t have yours yet? Download the newest version through the University’s Mobile App web page.

The safety app provides a one-stop access to all of the University’s safety resources.

Feedback is always welcome and can be provided through the app under About-Preferences or by e-mail to safety@yorku.ca.
