Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) announced on Monday that York University has been selected as the host for the 2015 CIS Men’s Soccer Championship.
The tournament will be held at York Stadium Nov. 12-15 and will feature the top eight teams from the four conferences across the country. As hosts, the Lions will earn an automatic bid into the championship.
York has hosted the tournament twice previously, in 1972 and again in 1996.
“We are thrilled to be hosting the men’s CIS soccer championship,” said Jennifer Myers, York’s director of Sport & Recreation. “We have one of the best soccer programs in the country and newly-renovated, state-of-the art turf and lights at York Stadium, and we are excited to show off both. I look forward to welcoming the very best soccer student-athletes to our campus next year.”
The Lions men’s soccer team has been one of the most successful in the country over the last several years. Since head coach Carmine Isacco took over the program in 2007, the Lions have won two CIS championships (2008, 2010) and two OUA titles (2007, 2013), and finished in first place in the OUA West Division in each season. They have appeared at the CIS championships four times in that stretch and have appeared in 39 straight CIS polls, dating back to Week 6 in 2010.
The team is currently atop the CIS rankings and completed an undefeated regular-season on Sunday at 14-0-2. The Lions will begin the hunt for the OUA and CIS banners next weekend with an OUA quarter-final match on Sunday at 3:15pm.
