York’s Centre for Human Rights invites the York community to join in the commemoration for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women.
Opening ceremonies for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women will take place with aboriginal elder Laureen Waters on Thursday, Dec. 4, from 11:30am to 12:30pm, at the Underground Restaurant, Student Centre.
Commemorative blankets and candles will be distributed (limited quantity) and hot chocolate will be served.
Victoria Pezzo, executive director, Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto, will deliver the keynote talk, titled “Presentation Topic: Gender-based Violence & Its Impact on Aboriginal Communities.”
Singer, community activist and York alum The Real Sun will give a guest performance.
Rhonda Lenton, vice-president academic and provost, and a representative from the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Support Line & Leadership will deliver the closing remarks.
Dec. 6, 2014, marks the 25th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, a tragic act of gender-based violence where 14 young women were singled out for their gender and murdered on the campus of L’École Polytechnique in Montréal. In 1991, the Parliament of Canada established Dec. 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada.
