Join filmmaker, York visual arts Professor and activist Nancy Nicol for a special screening of her most recent documentary, No Easy Walk To Freedom, Jan. 21, at 12pm in N102 Ross, Nat Taylor Cinema.
Presented by Cinema Politica and OPRIG York, Nicol will introduce her documentary and lead a post-screening discussion.
Filmed in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Lucknow and rural India, No Easy Walk To Freedom tells the story of the struggle to strike down section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that forbids homosexuality. The film exhibits a moving examination of the struggle to decriminalize the penal code in contemporary India.
Told through the voices of lawyers, HIV AIDS workers, activists and community leaders, the documentary exposes human rights violations; while also documenting the growth of queer organizations in India during this historic legal battle to overturn a colonial-era law.
No Easy Walk To Freedom first premiered in this year’s Toronto Inside Out LGBT Film Festival, and is the outcome of a large international research project and documentary in partnership with Envisioning Global LGBT Human Rights.
