Terry Fowler

Edmund P. (Terry) Fowler, professor emeritus of political science at Glendon College, died March 14 in Toronto following a long illness.

Between 1967 and 2003, when he retired from Glendon, Professor Fowler created and taught courses in local government, voting behaviour, community power structure, history of science and green philosophy. He created and ran the Glendon Municipal Intern Program, under which students worked for municipal councillors in the Toronto region.

In 2003, Professor Fowler helped to organize and then chaired Kyoto and Sprawl, a major conference that brought together urban planners, politicians, grass-roots activists, developers, and academics to work out solutions to the problem of sprawl. Speakers included Elizabeth May, soon to be Canada’s first Green Party Member of Parliament, and Jack Layton, former head of the New Democratic Party.

Over the years, Professor Fowler addressed commissions and committees of the Ontario and Toronto governments. He was actively involved in Karma Food Co-op, Toronto’s oldest and largest food co-operative, as editor of its newsletter, The Chronicle.

Professor Fowler was a devoted teacher, dedicated to his students, and a great supporter of Glendon.  Details of a celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
