Call for nominations: Odessa Prize for the Study of Canada

The $1,000 Odessa Prize for the Study of Canada is awarded annually to a fourth-year undergraduate student who is judged to have written the best essay on a topic related to the study of Canada.

Faculty are invited to submit one essay, with a short covering letter explaining the context in which the work is written.

For the 2014-15 academic year, the deadline for submission is May 19. Submissions will be adjudicated by a committee formed by the Robarts Centre, and the prize winner will be announced in June.

Hard copy (one copy) or electronic submissions should be sent to:

  • Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies
    7th floor, Kaneff Tower
    York University

The Odessa Prize in the Study of Canada was established by Irvin Studin, a York alumnus and former Rhodes scholar. Studin is the editor of What is a Canadian? Forty-three Thought-Provoking Responses (2006). The son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, the book is dedicated to his parents, who were from Odessa. The Odessa Prize was made possible by the generous donation of profits from the sale of the book.
