As part of Frost Week, the York Federation of Students (YFS) will present a seminar titled “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Work but Were Afraid to Ask” on Wednesday, Jan. 13, from 1 to 3:30pm at The Underground.
A panel of York alumni and professionals will provide tips and advice for getting ahead in your job search. Panellists will also share insights about their experiences, and what they wish they had known about career management before graduating.
Participants of the seminar will:
- get insider tips on where and how to find a job, make a great impression at work and succeed early in their careers;
- meet and network with accomplished alumni and professionals and hear their best career planning advice; and
- talk to experts and ask questions about their own job searches and career planning.
Registration is required for this event. Students can register on the Career Centre’s online system (you must sign up for an account before you will be able to register for any events on the system).
Participating panellists include:
• David Peck, president and founder, SoChange (BA philosophy ’03)
Peck is the founder of SoChange, a social enterprise that works alongside members of the corporate and NGO community in areas such as fundraising, advocacy and donor relations. He is a writer, speaker and lecturer. In 2006, Peck co-created the award-winning children’s show Spellz. In 2007, he founded yChange, a social justice conference that has been held in Toronto, Vancouver and Hong Kong. Peck then founded the Mosquitoes Suck Tour in 2008 – a show that entertains and educates audiences about malaria. He was named a Global Hero by Verge magazine in 2009.
• Stefany Ting, HR representative, Honda Canada Inc. (BAS human resources management ’11)
Back in 2011, Ting never pictured herself as a human resources generalist. If someone told her that she would have become a public speaker and job coach with the ability to influence people’s careers through the sharing of knowledge, she would have asked if they were talking about the right person. Today, it’s all true and she loves every minute of it.
• Sargam Yagnik, management associate, project analyst, BCD Travel (BA sociology ’12)
Yagnik was never the kind of person who knew what she wanted to do in life. She changed her mind constantly – that is, until she went backpacking across Australia and then decided to settle in Switzerland. When she came back, she knew she was passionate about travel and that her career path had to have everything to do with the tourism industry.
