York University mathematics and statistics Professor Huaxiong Huang has been appointed the Deputy Director of the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences. Huang’s term is effective from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2019.
Huang has served as the Associate Director for Industry Liaison, also for the Fields Institute since Sept. 1, 2014.
“At the Fields Institute, we strive to promote the many connections between fundamental research and the applications of mathematics. In the last two years as the associate director of industry liaison, Dr. Huang has helped build rewarding relationships with some of the largest corporations in North America,” said Ian Hambleton, director of the Fields Institute. “As deputy director, his mathematical expertise and understanding of industrial and commercial applications will now have a wider impact on all the activities of the institute. I very much look forward to working with Huaxiong in his new role.”
Huang is the editor of Mathematics-In-Industry Case Studies, Advances in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics and Journal of Engineering Mathematics. He has been a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at York University since 1999. His research focuses on applied and industrial mathematics.
"Huaxiong's appointment further strengthens the close connections between York mathematicians and the Fields Institute,” said Ray Jayawardhana, dean of the Faculty of Science. “I'm confident he will help advance the pivotal role of the Fields Institute as an international research centre for mathematics and related areas.”
