Weekend wrap: Wrestlers earn medals at Ontario University Athletics Championships

It was a successful day for the Lions wrestling team Saturday as Alexandria Town and Tyler Tate-Austin both won bronze medals at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Wrestling Championships at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

With their podium results, both Town and Tate-Austin have now qualified for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Championships, which will take place on Feb. 26 and 27 at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont.

The powerhouse Brock University Badgers finished in first place in both the men’s and women’s team standings. The Lions finished in sixth place in the men’s team standings. More details on the York Lions website.

Big win for men’s volleyball Lions as they take down No. 10 Warriors in three sets

Returning to the Tait McKenzie Centre after four weeks spent on the road, the York University men’s volleyball team upset the No. 10 nationally ranked University of Waterloo Warriors by a perfect 3-0 score on Sunday afternoon.

With the result, the Lions (8-11) stand in the seventh position in the OUA Standings and the Warriors are tied in fifth place with the Western University Mustangs.

For the Lions, Arthur Szwarc led in points with 18.5, 11 kills, and nine blocks. Nicolas Pirnat tallied 13.5 points and nine kills, and Alexander Duncan-Thibault had 10.5 points with eight kills. All three Lions also had one service ace each while Logan Mend had 29 assists. More details.

Women’s volleyball Lions fall in fifth set to Warriors

Coming off of a six-game tour on the road, the York University women’s volleyball team returned to the Tait McKenzie Centre on Sunday afternoon and lost by a narrow 3-2 score to the University of Waterloo Warriors.

With the game tied two sets apiece, it was a tight and exciting fifth set that featured a promising five-point comeback from the Lions. After the Warriors Alyson Colpitts nailed a critical kill and the Lions made an attack error, the Warriors were able to take the set in a 15-13 win and secure the 3-2 victory. More details.

Men’s basketball Lions squeezed out by Lancers in overtime

After a nail-biting match at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday night, the York University men’s basketball team dropped an 86-85 overtime loss to the OUA West’s first-placed University of Windsor Lancers (10-6) to remain in fourth place in the OUA East Standings.

Jon Dulmage was clutch down the stretch as he hit a critical long range jump shot towards the end of action and a lay-up that tied the score at 78-78 with nine seconds left of play. The two plays forced the game into overtime where the Lions fell on a made free throw by the Lancers Isiah Osborne with three seconds remaining. More details.

A day later, Lions men’s basketball squad`s comeback fell just short as they were narrowly defeated 81-80 to the resurging Western University Mustangs at the Tait Mackenzie Centre on Saturday night.

The Lions offense went ice old to begin the game going minutes without a basket, but that same offense would come alive in the later parts of Saturdays game resulting in an exciting finish. The three ball was falling for the Lions, and leading the charge was none other than deep shot specialist Tommy Hobbs), who knocked down three in the loss. Jayden Frederick was also a key contributor from down town going three for six in 35 minutes of playing time. More details.

Women’s basketball Lions drop 80-65 loss to the No. 10 Lancers

On Friday night, the York University women’s basketball team fell 80-65 to the No. 10 University of Windsor Lancers at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

Lions Ishaana Seupersadsingh, Sandra Nagowska, and Shauney Fischer tallied the most points. All three were perfect from the free throw line, while Seupersadsingh had 15 points, Nagowska had 14 and Fischer followed with eight.

The Lancers played steady throughout the game and were able to take the match in an 80-65 win. More details.

On Saturday evening, Lions women’s basketball team was defeated by the OUA East Division leader the Western University Mustangs by a score of 93-47 at The Tait Mackenzie Centre.

The Mustangs have suffered only one defeat in nearly a month of action, going nine and one down the stretch. On Saturday evening, the post play by the Mustangs caused havoc down low for the Lions interior defense, as Alex Van Heeswyk led the charge with 14 points and nine rebounds. More details.

Last regular season home game sees men’s hockey Lions fall to Lancers in OT

The York University Lions men’s hockey team fell to the University of Windsor Lancers in their final regular season home game of the 2015-16 season on Friday night by a score of 4-3 in overtime at Canlan Ice Sports Arena.

In the extra frame, the Lancers were desperate to take down the first place Lions and they eventually did at the 2:19 mark. A gang of Lancers crashed the Lion crease and a bouncing puck escaped the crowd and came to the side of the night. Justice Dundas capitalized on the mayhem, corralling the puck and flipping it over a sprawling Lions goalie Chris Perugini to give the Lancers the win. More details.

The following day, the Lions men’s hockey team lost to their cross town rival the University of Toronto Varsity Blues by a score of 4-1 on Saturday night on the road at Varsity Arena.

The game consisted of 82 combined penalty minutes with multiple game misconducts for both sides. The power play units were utilized at their full capacity on Saturday evening, which resulted in all five goals being scored on the odd man advantage. More details.

Badgers top women`s hockey Lions in second overtime 

The York University Lions women’s hockey team came back and forced overtime in Sunday’s matchup with the Brock University Badgers, but fell 2-1 in the second overtime period at Canlan Ice Sports.

The Lions began Sunday`s game with a burst of offence as they controlled the pace for the majority of the first period. The Lions outshot the Badgers 39-21 throughout the game, and Badgers starting goaltender Jensen Murphy turned aside twelve in the opening period alone.

Both sides were unsuccessful in the first overtime period, sending the game into a second overtime period. The goal came from a Brenna Murphy individual effort, which saw her snipe a shot passed Lions goals Megan Lee to give the Badgers their tenth win on the season. More details.

Two days earlier on Friday evening, the Lions came up short losing 2-1 to the Western University Mustangs in London, Ont.

The Mustangs surrendered 37 Lion shots, but the stellar goaltending from Western tender Kelly Campbell was the deciding factor in the win, as she turned aside 36 shots.

In the first period, the Mustangs came out firing, and just over two minutes into the opening frame they managed to beat Megan Lee to give them the early advantage. The goal was scored unassisted by Katelyn Gosling. More details.
