McLaughlin College Lunch Talk Series continues with several events in March

McLaughlin College presents several events in March as part of its Lunch Talk Series.

The first, presented March 8 from noon to 2pm in the Senate Chambers, will feature Barbara Hall and marks UN International Women’s Day. The talk, titled “Because it’s 2015. That was last year”, refers to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s comments on his gender-balanced cabinet. The lecture will focus on stepping up for parity today, and every day forward, here and around the world.

Hall has been a community worker, lawyer, city councillor, mayor of Toronto, and chief commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission. She works for safe, healthy communities and lived human rights for all.

March 9 will featured the talkThe Real Ally McBeal and Good Wife: What Lawyers Really Do” presented by Eunice Machado. It takes place noon to 1:30pm in the Senior Common Room, 140 McLaughlin College.

Machado is crown counsel in the Ministry of the Attorney General and previously a partner at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP. She will discuss her career as a lawyer and her varied experience in terms of what lawyers really do.

On March 17, lawyer Greg Levine will present the talk “The Law of Government Ethics Nine Years On” from noon to 1:30pm in the Senior Common Room, 140 McLaughlin College.

In December of 2015, Westlaw/Carswell/Canada Law Book published the second edition of the book The Law of Government Ethics: Federal, Ontario and British Columbia. This presentation will focus on some of the major trends in ethics law, some of the technical changes in some areas and some problems vexing the growth and efficacy of this area of law.

Levine is a lawyer whose work focuses on administrative, municipal and government ethics law and he is currently the Integrity Commissioner for five Ontario municipalities. He is the author of several books and many articles on areas and aspects of government ethics law and has been an expert in the policy panels of two major inquiries into ethics questions – the Mulroney-Schreiber Inquiry and the Mississauga Inquiry.
